About Pulse Oximeter

A pulse oximeter is a non invasive medical device used to measure the oxygen saturation level Spo2 in a person's blood   along with their pulse rate. It is a crucial tool in hospitals   clinics   and even home settings   especially for patients with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions such as asthma   COPD   pneumonia   or COVID 19.

The device typically clips onto a thin part of the body   like a fingertip   earlobe   or toe. It uses light sensors to detect the amount of oxygen in the blood. The oximeter emits light through the skin; oxygen rich hemoglobin absorbs more infrared light   while oxygen poor hemoglobin absorbs more red light. Based on the light absorption   the device calculates the percentage of oxygenated hemoglobin and displays it digitally.

A normal Spo2 reading typically ranges from 95% to 100%. Readings below 90% are considered low and may indicate hypoxemia   which requires immediate medical attention.

Pulse oximeters are especially useful in monitoring patients during surgery   after anesthesia   or during treatment for chronic illnesses. During the COVID 19 pandemic   they became widely used at home to detect silent hypoxia low oxygen levels without noticeable symptoms.

Modern pulse oximeters are portable   affordable   and easy to use. Some even come with smartphone connectivity for real time health monitoring and data sharing with healthcare providers.

However   while pulse oximeters provide quick and useful information   they are not a replacement for comprehensive medical evaluation. Factors like cold fingers   poor circulation   dark nail polish   or movement can affect accuracy.

In summary   a pulse oximeter is a simple yet vital tool for tracking oxygen levels and heart rate   playing a key role in early detection and ongoing management of health conditions affecting oxygenation.
